Based on the epic graphic novel by John Bergin, FROM INSIDE is the tale of Cee, a young pregnant woman who finds herself on a damaged train slowly transcribing its way across a bleak, apocalyptic landscape. Flood, war, starvation, and a plague of death threaten the train’s passengers. Cee struggles through these dangers while coping with the memory of her lost husband and the imminent birth of her child.

The young director, Gael Metroz, takes the road alone, camera in hand, in the footsteps of Nicolas Bouvier. He discovers that the East is no longer the almost carefree land of the Fifties recounted in l’Usage du Monde: Iran in crises, Pakistan shaken by tribal violence’s, Taliban, civil war in Sri Lanka. This world, Bouvier had the usage, seem to have disappeared under the veil of time. Disappointed the director leaves the main road traced by the famous Topolino and continues on the small path with the nomads. In creating his own route, Gael Metroz reveals the writer’s philosophy of travel.

Jeremy Deller and Nick Abrahams’ film shows the impact of Basildon’s biggest cultural export, Depeche Mode, using the stories and voices of devotees from around the world. Plotting an alternative history in which pop culture is given its due, and Basildon helped end the cold war, the film uncovers extraordinary tales of faith and devotion from Iran, Russia, Romania and even England.
