The Illusion – 2009

Susana Barrigas documentary, the illusion, begins with violence. A long shot reveals a man standing on a street corner, his features indiscernible in the night. He moves out of the cameras line of vision, but the filmmaker, persistent, moves with him as the jostling of the camera marks her steps. As we learn moments later, the man in the distance is Susanas father and this is the clearest image of him we will have. Suddenly, an angry British man demands that Susana cease filming. Susana protests in heavily accented English, He is my father! Glimpses of a mans torso are followed by blurred images as the camera spins rapidly over surfaces. The image cuts to black. A new male voice asks in carefully spaced out words if Susana would like him to call the police. When she doesnt respond immediately, he speaks louder, as though volume would compensate for the language difference. She gives her name; she refuses the offer of an ambulance.

The Fatality – 2009

Somehow, a mentally disturbed 30-year-old man from Taipei finds himself waking up out of a coma in a hospital in a small coastal town in Thailand. A woman is at his bedside, calling him Assanee. But that’s not his name. His name is Her Sue Yong. And besides, he can’t speak Thai. He leaps from his bed and runs, and the nurses give chase. In Taiwan, he was a bedraggled, long-haired scavenger. He had a disfigured face. But in Thailand, the skin on his face is smooth and his hair is short. He’s a clean-cut young man with a beautiful wife. And he has a job as a civil servant in a government office. His inability to speak Thai is no problem at work. Heck, there’s even a deaf-mute on the staff. All Assanee has to do is wait for people to hand him forms, and he stamps them. Seems easy enough.

When Momo leaves his small home town to go to university, he is full of enthusiasm and confidence, but slowly the pressures of study and campus living begin to grind him down. Half way through his course he finds himself at a crossroads with both his relationship and studies.

Senario The Movie Episode 2 Beach Boys – 2009

This time around, the gang – Azlee, Mazlan and Wahid go for a vacation to an island resort. Upon their arrival, they discover that the resort isn’t what they had expected it to be. It looked deserted and on the verge of bankruptcy. They decide to help the owner, Mansor to restore the resort and attract more tourists. But, things didn’t go well. Disappointed by the situation, they decide to call it quits and leave the resort. However, things go awry when Remy comes into picture offering a salvation on Mansor’s business. Noticing something fishy about Remy’s plan, Mazlan steps in and unveils Remy’s true identity to Mansor. Remy goes mad and abducts Mansor’s daughter, Qasidah. Once again, the gang face bigger test in their attempt to rescue Qasidah.

A tribute to filmmakers and National Artists Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal. In the “Day” segment, Piolo Pacual portrays the role of William, a drug addict who tries to rebuild his sense of self and reconnect with the people around him. For the “Night” segment, Pascual portrays the role of Philip, who works as a bodyguard for a mayor’s son. The bodyguard believes that his boss considers him as part of the family but after a shooting incident, he realizes his real worth to his boss. As he struggles to hide, he is slowly consumed by the claws of darkness lurking the city.
