Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune – 2011

From civil rights to the anti-war movement to the struggles of workers, folksinger Phil Ochs wrote topical songs that engaged his audiences in the issues of the 1960s and 70s. In this biographical documentary, veteran director Kenneth Bowser shows how Phil’s music and his fascinating life story and eventual decline into depression and suicide were intertwined with the history-making events that defined a generation. Even as his contemporaries moved into folk-rock and pop music, Phil followed his own vision, challenging himself and his listeners. Not one to pull punches, Ochs never achieved the commercial success he desperately desired. But his music remains relevant, reaching new audiences in a generation that finds his themes all too familiar.

King’s Game – 2011

One night, Chiemi Honda (Yurina Kumai) and childhood friend Nobuaki Kanazawa (Dori Sakurada) receive an email. The sender is the King and the subject of the email is “King Game.” The email states that if the recipient does not complete the king’s order within 24 hours then they will be punished. Since that first email all of Chiemi’s classmates receive an email from the King. At first, students think it’s a joke, but perform the orders anyways. Gradually, the orders become worse. Finally, 2 classmates who do not follow the orders are punished. Then classmates start to disappear in sequence. Maria Iwamura stares at one classmate coldly. You might think he’s really “someone”, really a “representative of the people”, but really just a representative of skirting boards, of coffee rings, nothing more. Overall, political invective’s that should be perceived solely as poetic invective’s. Overall, spreading geopolitics across geology and poetics. Like a question-Eskimo, dancing and waving his ribbons in the air, turns and changes on a pillar, becomes a question-Holocaust. In fact, “geopoetics” is a kind of a Holocaust seen as a choir, as an ensemblement, as an Eskimo.
